Now that you have a better understanding of what the four main components are for Power BI, we’re going to go through each and every one of them in a little bit more detail so you can have a better understanding of what Power BI is and what it can do for you.

Power BI Desktop Versions
We are going to start with Power BI Desktop.

If you remember from my previous video Power BI Desktop is the tool that you can download from the internet and install on your computer.

There are actually three Power BI Desktop versions, yes, there are! and there is a good reason for that.

When you go to the Internet and you google Power BI Desktop, the version that you will get there is the most common one and this is probably the one that you will use too. You can download it from Microsoft pages, you can download it from Microsoft documentation, you can unload it from Power BI Service… There are a few ways to download it, but you won’t miss it! that is an easy one to find, that has no restrictions at all and is, as I said before, the one that is most commonly used.

Power BI Desktop for Report Server
The next Power BI version is a Power BI Desktop version for report server. I don’t know if you remember that there were two versions of Power BI Service you have: Power BI service online, on the cloud and then you have a power BI report server that is when you have it on your intranet and it never leaves your firewall.

So, there is a Power BI Desktop version for that, for Power BI report server. It is actually called Power BI Desktop for report server.

Why does that version exist? Well, Power BI report server is made for those companies that do not want yet to have their data on the cloud and that Power BI Desktop version removes all internet connectivity that you will find on the normal one.

So there are a few things that won’t work: custom visuals doesn’t work for example, R-visuals or R-scripts don’t work either, so there are limitations to protect you. If you said once I don’t want my data online, Power BI Desktop for RS makes sure that it doesn’t get there and that’s why you have it.

It’s a limited version, there are quite substantial limitations as to what you can do, but you still have Power BI, a very powerful version of Power BI in there too.

Power BI Desktop App Store
What is the third version you might wonder?

Here’s the thing, Power BI team, Microsoft team they actually update Power BI Desktop every month, every single month, at the beginning of the month now, before it was at the end, a new version of Power BI Desktop shows up for you to download and of course: great thing!, it is absolutely amazing! but now imagine that you are a big enterprise or perhaps you are, it is a mess!

You have to make sure that all your employees every month will download the right version, also whatever compatibility you have with the features it works, and it becomes a little bit complicated.

To avoid that problem what Microsoft has done, if you have Windows 10 and you have the Microsoft Store there is the Microsoft Power BI Desktop app in there and the beautiful thing about that, is that users will download it connect to it and it updates automatically! You don’t have to do anything at all!

That is really, really, really useful and that is the reason why there are three versions: one is the normal one, the standard one, the other one is for report server and the third one is from the app store for those that do not want to update manually.
