The Fastest Way To Create A Comprehensive Date Table Within Your Power BI Models

  1. In your Power BI model, click Transform Data in the menu.
  2. Click New Source, and choose Blank Query.
  3. Head over to the Enterprise DNA forum.   Under the M Code showcase, you will find the Extended Date Table post (https://forum.enterprisedna.co/t/extended-date-table-power-query-m-function/6390)
  4. Copy the code from that post.
  5. Back in Power BI, click the Advanced Editor.  Remove the existing text. Paste the code you copied. Click Done.
  6. There will then be Parameters for you to enter.  Fill in the Start Date and End Date.
  7. There are optional parameters as well.  If using a fiscal year, you can enter the start month (numerical – i.e. 4 for April).
  8. Click Invoke.
  9. Rename the resulting new table to Dates.
  10. Rename the query to Dates Query.
  11. Click Close and Apply.

Please watch the video for a step by step walkthrough and explanation of the how to in this tutorial.

In this video, we’re going back to basics and I’ll show you the fastest way to create a highly comprehensive data table within the Power BI Models from scratch.

I’ve done so many tutorials about creating date tables over the years, but this new method is by far, the most efficient way to do it. This is actually an approach developed by one of our Enterprise DNA experts, Melissa De Korte. Not only will this approach make the entire process faster, but it’s also going to yield better quality results.
